Jimmy Murray commissioned me to paint this mural on the 11' by 7' outer wall of his Harvard Square restaurant in Spring 2003. Mr. Murray gave me total creative freedom, stipulating only that his Native American heritage be represented in the mural--hence, the teepee. Brilliant singer, songwriter, pianist, and activist Nina Simone died while I was planning the mural, so I worked in the memorial to her in the lower left, which reads: "R.I.P. Nina Simone 1933-2003; Prodigy, Virtuoso, Voice of the Oppressed." A little girl eating at the restaurant suggested I add the dolphin in the waterway at the bottom center.
